Speaker: Jonatan Kurzwelly, PhD (Post-doctoral Research Fellow, University of the Free State, South Africa)

Abstract: Nueva Germania, a settlement in the north of Paraguay, was established as a eugenic, racist, and anti-Semitic settlement in the end of the 19th century by Bernhard Förster and Elisabeth Nietzsche. As such, it was represented in several journalistic accounts through the prism of a sensationalistic history, often in ways that are harmful and offensive to its current inhabitants. In my lecture I will oppose this sensationalistic trend and I will present stories which were told by some of the Germaninos [inhabitants of Nueva Germania] of German and Paraguayan descent in a collaborative research process. These stories cover a wide variety of subjects, which the project participants chose themselves. I will further reflect on what we can learn about social identities from these stories from an anthropological and philosophical perspective.

Bio: Jonatan Kurzwelly was born a child of artists from the two sides of the Iron Curtain. Despite his dual citizenship, he never felt German in Germany, nor Polish in Poland. This personal question of identity developed in his academic interest in nationalism and social identities in general. His other academic interests include: sensory and visual anthropology, experimental and collaborative research methods, existential and phenomenological anthropology, and theories in social sciences. Jonatan recently obtained a PhD in social anthropology from the University of St Andrews, Scotland.
